Should I Delete Pictures with My Ex Now I'm With Someone Else?

Updated: Aug 4, 2021

Ugh, the dreaded task, sift through all your social media and delete how ever many years worth of selfies, foodstagrams, travel pics and god knows what else with those who shalt not be named.

But should you really have to... and do you even want to? This is a question I was recently pondering as I scrolled through my instagram all the way back to 2012 when I posted my first instagram and of course used the absolute best filter ever - miss Valencia. Looking at two fresh faced 18 year old smiles smiling back at me it was like looking back in time at a relationship that seems like a lifetime ago.

The thought crossed my mind 'is this bad i have pictures still on here of my ex?' 'would this upset my boyfriend now?' 'if my boyfriend still had pictures with his ex would i be annoyed' and before I could create anymore questions, the answer came to me - no.

No, it isn't bad to have photos of your history, it isn't bad to not feel the need to wipe out memories that make you who you are. One thing our generation is so lucky to have is in 50 years time we will be able to look back at all our self documented years and remember all those moments, highs, lows and stories behind the photos.

Now, I'm not saying I'm not partial to a petty 'delete the lot' when your going through a weird phase in a breakup. Which does explain the void of a pretty long relationship I had now absolutely no where to be seen as though wiped from history. Or doing it because its what you need to heal or to move forward. But I don't think, deleting pictures just because you think you have too is the right way to go.

So ask yourself, what will deleting them actually do for you? Will it help you move on and move forward? Or will it just remove a time in your life you may have been able to look back on and appreciate, maybe not for all of it, but for who it made you?
