How do I know if its a gut feeling or if its my anxiety getting the better of me?
Having a weird feeling about something and not sure whether your bodys trying to tell you something or the sushi you ate last night is about to be all over your bathroom floor?
Let's talk about that pit in the bottom of your stomach, heart in your mouth, good old gut feeling.
You know the inner instinct I'm talking about. The avoiding a certain alleyway, the ex you always knew would cheat… and they did. The overly nice new girl at work that gives you snake vibes and you have no idea why but you're always right? Yes, that's your true north at work.
But what happens when your gut feeling gets mixed and mashed up with… wait for it.. Anxiety UGGGGGGHHH. The absolute tourture, the inner turmoil of:
‘‘stop thinking negatively, you're being ridiculous’’
‘’But what if i'm right? I feel like this is right?’’
‘’Your not a mindreader stop being crazy’’
And before you know it you're exhausted from the conversion you've had with yourself over and over about the way you're feeling versus the way you should be thinking.
So how are we supposed to know the difference between gut feeling and anxiety? Well girls, this is a frequent thought process of mine so you best believe I've googled the hell out of this shit and found a few explanations that help me filter through the negative BS.
To put it quite simply: a gut feeling is consistent, the instinct about that certain thing doesn't waiver, it's always the same feeling. Anxiety on the other hand, is all over the place; sometimes it seems one way and the next, another.
So the next time you have a gut feeling about something, ask yourself… is this consistent? Do I always feel this way? If the answer is yes, I say go with it. If the answer is no, you're possibly just over thinking something and convincing yourself of a certain narrative that fits a fear or a desire.
Knowing the difference helps you decide which direction to go, if you believe in that sort of thing. And ofcourse… I definitely do.
